The Process

How the awards work

Each awards cycle follows a transparent process, with dates and participating counties published before entries or nominations open.

Entries open

Eligible businesses register, nominate themselves or are nominated by another person, subject to the rules for that awards cycle.

Evidence is submitted

Entrants provide relevant examples, supporting information and evidence relating to the category for which they wish to be considered.

County judging

Each eligible entry is assessed within its assigned county using the published judging criteria and the evidence supplied.

Finalists and winners

Finalists and winners are contacted and may be featured on Skills 2 Grow channels, subject to permission and the award badge usage rules.

Not every criterion will apply equally to every category. Judges will focus on the evidence most relevant to the selected award.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same award be given in more than one county?

Yes. Every category is assessed separately for each participating county. For example, one business may win the Most Organised Business award in Oxfordshire and another business may win the same category in Warwickshire.

How is a business assigned to a county?

A business will normally be assigned according to its principal trading address. Where a business trades across several counties, Skills 2 Grow may request evidence and decide the most appropriate county for that awards cycle.

Are active Skills 2 Grow members eligible?

Active members are eligible for free consideration, subject to the published rules, deadlines and evidence requirements for the relevant awards cycle.

Does membership guarantee an award?

No. Membership, nomination or entry does not guarantee selection as a finalist or winner. Every eligible entry is assessed against the published judging criteria.

Can a business nominate itself?

Self-nominations may be accepted. The entry process for each awards cycle will confirm whether self-nominations, third-party nominations or both are available.

Is an awards ceremony guaranteed?

No. Awards may be announced online, at an in-person event or through another format selected by Skills 2 Grow. The format will be confirmed for each awards cycle.

Terms and conditions

These terms apply to the Skills 2 Grow Business Awards unless additional terms are published for a particular awards cycle.

1. Awards organiser

The Skills 2 Grow Business Awards are organised by Skills 2 Grow. Contact regarding the awards should be made through the contact details published on the Skills 2 Grow website.

2. Awards cycle and participating counties

Entry dates, nomination dates, closing dates, announcement dates and participating counties will be published for each awards cycle. Skills 2 Grow may operate the awards in some counties and not others.

3. County-based categories

Each award category is judged separately within each participating county.
The same category may therefore have a different winner in more than one county.
A county winner is not automatically a national or United Kingdom-wide winner.
A business will normally be assigned to the county of its principal trading address.
Skills 2 Grow may request reasonable evidence of a business address or trading area.
Skills 2 Grow has final discretion regarding county allocation where circumstances are unclear.

4. Eligibility

Entrants must be genuine trading businesses, social enterprises, charities or eligible organisations.
The nominated organisation must operate in or have a meaningful trading connection with the assigned county.
Entrants must provide accurate, complete and non-misleading information.
Skills 2 Grow may reject an entry that is incomplete, late, unverifiable, inappropriate or outside the published criteria.
Active Skills 2 Grow members may be eligible for free consideration, but membership does not guarantee finalist or winner status.

5. Nominations and permission

A business may nominate itself where self-nominations are permitted. A person nominating another business should have a reasonable basis for the nomination. Skills 2 Grow may contact the nominated business to obtain permission, confirm details and request evidence before the nomination proceeds.

6. Entry information and evidence

Entrants may be asked to provide written explanations, examples, testimonials, customer feedback, photographs, documents, website links, performance information or other relevant evidence. Skills 2 Grow may verify information and may request clarification.

7. Judging

Entries will be assessed using the published category criteria and the evidence available.
Judging may be carried out by Skills 2 Grow, invited judges or an appropriate judging panel.
Judges may decline to make an award where there are insufficient eligible entries or insufficient evidence.
Judges are not required to provide scores, detailed feedback or correspondence about judging decisions.
Judging decisions are final, subject to correction of an administrative or factual error.

8. Conflicts of interest

Judges should disclose any material connection with an entrant where that connection could reasonably affect impartiality. Skills 2 Grow may reassign an entry, seek an additional opinion or exclude a judge from considering a particular entry.

9. Finalists and winners

Being nominated or entering does not guarantee selection as a finalist or winner.
Finalists and winners will be contacted using the details supplied.
Skills 2 Grow may require confirmation of acceptance before publishing an announcement.
If a selected business cannot be contacted, declines recognition or is later found to be ineligible, another business may be selected or the category may remain unawarded.

10. Publicity and content permission

Skills 2 Grow will seek appropriate permission before publishing personal contact details. By accepting finalist or winner status, the business agrees that its business name, county, category, logo and approved entry information may be used to announce and promote the awards. Any additional interview, photograph or case study will be subject to reasonable approval.

11. Award badges and certificates

Only confirmed finalists or winners may use the badge or certificate issued to them.
The badge must not be altered in a misleading way.
The category, county and year must not be removed or misrepresented.
An award must not be described as a national award unless Skills 2 Grow has expressly designated it as such.
Skills 2 Grow may require use of an award badge to stop where the award has been withdrawn or misused.

12. Withdrawal of recognition

Skills 2 Grow may withdraw finalist or winner status where information was false or materially misleading, eligibility requirements were not met, the award badge is misused, or serious conduct comes to light that could reasonably damage the credibility of the awards. The business may be asked to stop using all related badges, certificates and claims.

13. Prizes and financial value

Unless a specific prize is clearly advertised for an awards cycle, recognition consists of the title and any stated badge, certificate, feature or publicity opportunity. Awards have no cash alternative and no guaranteed commercial value.

14. Data protection

Personal information submitted for the awards will be used to administer entries, nominations, judging, verification, communications and announcements. Entrants should review the Skills 2 Grow privacy information for details about how information is used, retained and protected, and how to exercise applicable data protection rights.

15. Changes, postponement or cancellation

Skills 2 Grow may amend dates, categories, participating counties, judging arrangements or the format of the awards where reasonably necessary. Skills 2 Grow may postpone or cancel an awards cycle where circumstances make it impractical, unsafe or inappropriate to continue. Material changes will be communicated through appropriate Skills 2 Grow channels.

16. Acceptance of these terms

Submission or confirmation of an entry indicates acceptance of these terms and any additional terms clearly published for the relevant awards cycle.
