iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Is It Worth Upgrading for Small Business Owners?

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro Max, promising better performance, longer battery life and what it describes as one of its most significant camera upgrades in years.

For small business owners, however, the important question is not whether the new phone is technically better. It is whether those improvements will make a meaningful difference to their work and justify the cost.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at £1,299 in the UK with 256GB of storage. Pre-orders open at 1pm BST on 12 September, ahead of its release on 18 September. That is £100 more than the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro Max cost at launch.

A more capable camera for business content

The biggest practical upgrade is the new 48MP variable-aperture main camera. Its four aperture settings allow it to admit more light in darker environments or give the photographer greater control over depth of field.

Apple has also introduced professional controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and the viewing histogram. Rather than leaving every decision to automatic processing, businesses gain more control over how photographs and videos are captured.

This could be valuable for restaurants, hotels, tradespeople, beauty professionals, estate agents and online retailers that regularly produce their own promotional content without carrying a separate camera.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max also supports 4K time-lapse recording in Dolby Vision, improved low-light video and additional controls over photographic texture and grain.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max remains an excellent content-creation device. It already has three 48MP rear cameras, an 18MP Centre Stage front camera and optical-quality zoom options up to 8x. A business producing only occasional social content may see little practical difference.

Better performance and more AI capability

The A20 Pro uses a 2nm architecture and combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU. Apple says its updated graphics architecture can provide a performance increase of up to 40%. Two 16-core Neural Engines support Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI.

The extra power should be most noticeable when editing video, processing large images, playing demanding games or using increasingly sophisticated AI tools on the device.

For email, WhatsApp, banking, invoicing, social media and website management, the A19 Pro inside the iPhone 17 Pro Max is already more than capable. Most owners are unlikely to notice a dramatic speed difference in routine work.

A larger vapour chamber helps the new phone manage heat during sustained workloads. That matters more when recording long videos or performing intensive editing than when primarily making calls and answering messages.

Battery life may be the most useful improvement

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 43 hours of video playback. It can also charge to approximately 50% in 15 minutes with a compatible 60W adapter.

For owners who travel, attend events, create content on location or spend long days away from a desk, this may be more useful than extra processing power. A phone that lasts through the working day reduces dependence on power banks and rushed charging stops.

The display and design remain familiar

Both phones have a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz and outdoor brightness up to 3,000 nits. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a smaller Dynamic Island capable of displaying three Live Activities, but the overall viewing experience is unlikely to feel dramatically different.

The dimensions are effectively unchanged. One disadvantage is weight: the new model weighs 249g, compared with 233g for its predecessor. That extra 16g may be noticeable for people who hold the phone throughout the day or use it on a handheld stabiliser.

What could it change for your business?

Can a business claim the cost against tax?

A phone is not automatically free simply because it is described as a business expense.

HMRC says self-employed people cannot claim for the private use of phones or other office resources. If a device is used for both business and personal purposes, only the appropriate business proportion should normally be claimed.

For sole traders using cash-basis accounting, equipment kept for business may generally be treated as an allowable expense. Businesses using traditional accounting may instead need capital allowances. Treatment can differ for limited companies, employees, contracts and VAT-registered businesses.

Keep the invoice, maintain a reasonable record of business use and seek advice from an accountant when business and personal use are mixed. Tax relief reduces taxable profit; it does not reimburse the full purchase price.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth upgrading to?

For most people who already own an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the honest answer is probably no.

The new model is faster, lasts longer and offers a more versatile main camera, but its display, overall design, front camera, zoom range and everyday experience remain broadly familiar. Unless the camera or battery directly supports paid work, the commercial return from upgrading after one year may be limited.

It makes more sense for businesses that create large amounts of visual content, rely heavily on a phone while travelling or need the strongest available performance for demanding applications.

For everyone else, keeping the iPhone 17 Pro Max for another year may be the better business decision.

The best business phone is not necessarily the newest one. It is the one that produces enough value to justify its cost.
